We believe that the Church is the community of people who, by
God’s grace, belong to him. Each member is called by God to be
part of his mission in the world. God’s mission is to transform
every situation and relationship, so that it reflects his
perfect love, goodness and truth. He accomplishes this mission
through Christ’s atonement for sin, the living presence of the
Holy Spirit and all those who have responded to Christ’s call to
follow him. Thus, it is an essential mark of being a Christian
to be an agent of God’s missionary purposes – at home, in the
neighbourhood, at work and in the wider world.
There are many aspects to
mission. Through evangelism, the story of Jesus is told and
people are invited to believe in him, become his disciples and
join the community of God’s people. Through acts of service,
Jesus’ compassion and healing is brought to anyone suffering
from physical sickness or mental distress, anyone who is the
victim of conflict, violence, poverty or homelessness. Through a
prophetic witness in public life, God’s righteous demands are
made known to leaders in political life, business, industry, the
educational, health and legal professions, the media and in
leisure pursuits. Christians are required to live out their
faith in every situation, and thus share in God’s mission to
accomplish his will on earth as in heaven. |
